Two in five of the players fitted here play a substantial part of their golf somewhere other than the Coachella Valley. Winter residents, mostly, plus a steady flow of people who live here and travel to play. For all of them, a specification decided purely on what happens in this bay is a specification decided on half the evidence.
The obvious version of this problem is well understood: everything flies further here, so your yardages will be shorter elsewhere. Fine. Most players work that out within a round.
The version that catches people is subtler and considerably more annoying. It is not that the numbers shrink. It is that they shrink by different amounts, so the structure of the set changes, and a ladder that stepped beautifully in February on a valley course develops a distinctly lumpy patch somewhere in the middle by the time you have driven it to the coast.
Why the Gaps Move Unevenly
The air acts as a proportion, not a fixed subtraction. Denser air costs you some percentage of carry, and to a good approximation that percentage is similar across your clubs.
A constant percentage applied to unequal numbers produces unequal absolute changes. Three per cent of a two-hundred-yard club is six yards. Three per cent of a hundred-yard club is three. Your long clubs therefore lose roughly twice as much ground in yards as your short ones, because they had more ground to lose.
Which means the gaps between your long clubs compress and the gaps between your short clubs barely move. A set spaced evenly at the top of its range in thin air will be spaced more tightly at the top in dense air, while the bottom stays where it was.
Put concretely, with a set that steps at a clean eleven yards here.

Honestly, that is not a disaster. The steps drift from eleven to ten and back, which is small enough that most players will never feel it. I include the table partly to be fair to the opposite case: for a well-spaced set of irons, the road-trip problem is modest.
The trouble starts where the set is already stretched.
Where It Actually Bites
Two places, reliably.
The top of the bag. The gap between a driver and the next club down is the largest in golf, frequently thirty-five yards or more, and it is precisely where the proportional effect does the most absolute damage. A player who has arranged a driver, a three wood and a hybrid into something workable here will find all three bunched noticeably closer together at the coast, because the biggest numbers lost the most yards.
That sounds harmless and is not. Bunching at the top means two of those three clubs are now doing nearly the same job, and the hole that opens is below them rather than between them.
Below the wedges. The opposite failure. Short clubs barely change, so if a player has a genuine gap down there it stays a genuine gap in every climate. This is worth knowing because it kills a common piece of wishful thinking: people occasionally hope a trip to cooler air will tidy up a wedge gap. It will not. That gap is a loft problem and lofts do not care about air.
What We Actually Do About It
Three things, in order of how much difference they make.
Fit the ladder to the place you play most, not to the place you were measured. This is the whole of it, really. A client who plays sixty rounds a year in Oregon and eight here should have a set built to step evenly in Oregon, even though every reading on their sheet was taken in Palm Springs. That is what the travel column is for: it lets us optimise for a place while measuring in another.
Getting this backwards is the single most common error we see in sets fitted elsewhere in the valley. A winter resident walks into a shop in February, gets fitted on valley numbers, takes the clubs home in April and plays them for eight months in conditions nobody measured.
Where the split is genuinely even, optimise the middle. For a client who really does play half and half, we build to a point between the two columns rather than to either. The result is very slightly compromised in both places and badly wrong in neither, which for a fifty-fifty player is the correct trade.
Prefer even spacing over tight spacing. This is a general principle and it applies with particular force to travelling players. A set stepping at twelve yards everywhere survives a climate change better than a set stepping at eight in some places and fourteen in others, because when everything compresses proportionally the even set stays even and the uneven one gets worse in its worst spot.
The One Thing You Can Do Without Us
Write the temperature and the elevation on any yardage card you have, wherever it came from.
Not because you will do a calculation with them. Because it converts your card from a claim into a measurement, and the next time you are somewhere else and everything seems short, you will have the information required to work out whether that is the air or you.
Most of the players who arrive here frustrated about a set that "stopped working" have a set that works fine and a card built somewhere else, on a day nobody recorded. The clubs were never the problem. The paperwork was.
