Total Distance Is a Borrowed Number

Ask who did the work. Some of that yardage was produced by your golf club, and some of it was produced by ground your golf club has never met.

There is a question I ask clients when they quote me a distance, and it is not a rhetorical one. Who did that? Not what did the ball do, but which parties contributed, and in what proportion.

A golf shot has at least two authors. Your club and your swing put the ball into the air and determine where it comes down. That part is yours; you can take full credit for it and it travels with you. Then the ball meets some ground, and what happens next is a collaboration between your descent and a piece of the planet that was mown, watered, drained and baked by people you have never met.

Total distance adds those two contributions into a single figure and then reports the figure as a property of the club. That is an attribution error, and it is the reason we do not print one.

The Accounting Problem

Consider what would have to be true for a total distance figure to be a property of your seven iron. It would have to mean that the club produces that yardage, in the way that a kettle produces boiling water. Then the figure could sensibly go on a card and be relied upon.

But move the shot to a different course and the figure changes without the club changing at all. Move it to the same course in a different month and it changes again. Move it thirty yards left, onto a slope, and it changes a third time. A number that behaves like that is not describing the club. It is describing an encounter between the club and one particular afternoon.

Carry does not do this. Carry moves with the air, which is why the header on our sheets exists, but it does not move with the mowing schedule or with whether it rained on Thursday. It stays a property of what you did, adjusted for the medium it happened in. That is a considerably more stable thing to write on a card.

Where the Borrowed Portion Comes From

The ground's contribution is not small and it is not consistent. From our own records, the share of total distance produced by the ground rather than by the flight varies across an enormous range depending on the club and the surface.

Read down the driver row first. In February the ground gives back somewhere near seven per cent. In August, on the same fairway, it can approach twenty. On a two hundred and forty yard drive that is a swing of thirty yards attributable entirely to the mowing calendar and the irrigation budget.

Then read down the wedge row. Barely anything. A wedge lands steeply, stops nearly where it pitched, and its total and its carry are close to the same number all year round.

Why This Breaks a Yardage Card Specifically

Here is the practical damage, and it is the reason I care about this more than the abstraction would suggest.

If the ground's contribution were a flat percentage, a card built on totals would simply be uniformly optimistic and you would learn to adjust. Every number would be, say, eight per cent long, you would subtract eight per cent, and life would go on.

It is not flat. Look at the table again. The distortion is large at the top of the bag and nearly absent at the bottom. So a card built on totals is heavily inflated for your driver and long clubs, moderately inflated in the middle, and roughly correct for your wedges.

That does not merely make the card wrong. It makes the card wrong unevenly, which means it corrupts your gaps. The steps between your long clubs appear larger than they are and the steps between your short clubs appear about right, so a set that is genuinely evenly spaced will look uneven on paper, and a player attempting to correct that will introduce a real problem to fix an imaginary one.

We see this specific error perhaps twenty times a year. Someone arrives convinced their long irons are too far apart, having built their belief on a card of totals, and the measured spacing turns out to be fine.

What We Print Instead

Two columns, adjacent, never summed.

Carry sits first and is the figure everything else on the sheet is built from. Gaps are calculated on carry. Recommendations are made on carry. When we say a set steps evenly at eleven yards, that is eleven yards of carry.

Roll sits beside it as a separate estimate with a stated surface assumption attached, phrased as a range rather than a point. It is genuinely useful information, and it is particularly useful when it is large, because a driver with an unusually shallow descent will produce more of it and that is worth knowing about the club.

What the two columns never do is merge. There is no third column adding them together, and clients occasionally ask for one. The answer is that we would have to invent a golf course to add them on, and we would rather hand you both figures and let you add them on the actual course you are actually standing on, where the answer might be right.

The Reasonable Objection

Someone will point out that the ball does, in fact, end up at the total distance, and that pretending otherwise is precious. Fair enough.

The response is that you should absolutely plan for roll when you are on a golf course and can see the ground. What you should not do is bake an assumption about ground you cannot see into a card you carry everywhere. Roll is a decision you make at the shot, informed by what is in front of you. Carry is a property you can know in advance.

Put the stable thing on the card. Make the situational judgement in the situation. That is the whole argument, and it is why the sheet you leave here has two columns and no total.
